Am I an Ideal Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
The choice to undergo breast augmentation surgery is personal. If you are contemplating this procedure, it is important you do it for yourself. At a minimum, candidates should be a physically healthy adults with breasts that are fully developed. If you are dissatisfied with the overall appearance of your breasts because they look deflated, you may benefit from breast augmentation surgery performed by Dr. Charvet. Moreover, if your breasts have changed due to age, pregnancy, or weight loss, this procedure can give them increased shape and fullness. Breast augmentation may also be a welcome solution if you weight train or have limited original breast mass.
How Is Breast Augmentation Performed?
Before we begin your outpatient breast augmentation, we’ll start by discussing your desires and overall goals. During this conversation, we’ll discuss the type of implant you want, size, shape, and more. Incision type, as well as implant placement, are considerations that we will make at this time, too. At the start of your procedure, we’ll use general anesthesia to keep you comfortable. During your procedure, an incision will be made and the chosen breast implant will be placed into position. There are two techniques that may be applied for implant placement, and these include either submuscular placement (under the pec muscle) or submammary/subglandular placement (over the pec muscle). Where to place the implant depends on varying factors, including the size and type of implant, plus the experienced opinion of Dr. Charvet. Regardless of incision type, scarring is usually minimal. After we close the incisions, you will be able to leave after a short recovery in-office. You will need to wear a medical sports bra to help reduce swelling. Several days after surgery, the swelling and bruising will begin to slowly go away, and your breasts will start to look and feel normal. You should be able to resume everyday activities within a few days; however, exercise should be avoided for a few months.
What Happens After Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure with the patient under general anesthesia. Once the incision is made, the implant chosen for enhancement will be moved through the incision opening and deposited into a surgically created pocket, and then fitted into its correct position. Once the implant is in position, the incision is closed with skin adhesives or sutures. Each patient will be taken to a private recovery space and monitored before being released. You will be sent home wearing a medical sports bra to help reduce swelling. Within a few days, the swelling will begin to decrease, and the breasts will start to look and feel normal as they settle into their new position. Intraoperative nerve blocks under ultrasound in conjunction with ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) result in little to no downtime and a speedy recovery. A large percentage of patients can return to everyday activities the night of surgery; however, strenuous exercise should be delayed for about 3 – 6 weeks. Pain control is achieved without the need for narcotics as well. This surgery results in gorgeous outcomes that look and feel natural. This procedure in most cases can be a life changer for many individuals, allowing them the opportunity to feel more confident.
Breast Augmentation FAQS
How much does breast augmentation cost?
Your cost for breast augmentation surgery will vary based on your choices and whether you are having any other surgeries at the same time. When your treatment plan is developed in your consultation, Dr. Charvet can talk to you about estimated costs as well as financing options. To ensure you are happy with your results and they last a long time, it is better to focus on quality over costs.
Do I need a breast lift or augmentation?
Your plan might include implants, a lift, or both. Breast lift surgery removes excess skin and improves the breasts, while implants addresses the shape and size. In your consultation with Dr. Charvet, he will listen to your needs and goals before explaining your treatment options. A combination augmentation and lift are often included in a mommy makeover to revitalize the breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Can I breastfeed with implants?
If you might want to breastfeed after augmentation surgery, talk to Dr. Charvet during your consultation. It’s usually possible to breastfeed after implants, with the right surgical technique and placement. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can affect your results, which is why it is best to wait until your family is complete to have breast augmentation.
Does insurance cover breast augmentation?
In most cases, insurance does not cover breast augmentation as it is considered a cosmetic procedure. However, insurance coverage may be possible if the surgery is required for medical reasons — for example, as part of reconstruction after breast cancer.
What does “over” or “under” the muscle mean in relation to implants?
When Dr. Charvet or a Magnolia Plastic Surgery and MedSpa team member says an implant is “over” the muscle, it’s placed between your breast tissue and chest muscle. An “under” muscle placement puts the implant beneath the chest muscle. Each placement has pros and cons and can affect the look and feel of the augmented breasts.
What’s the right age to get breast augmentation?
The FDA recommends that patients be at least 18 years old for saline implants and at least 22 years old for silicone implants. However, age isn’t the only factor. Overall health, emotional readiness, and personal reasons for wanting the procedure also play significant roles.
