in New Orleans, LA

What Are Chemical Peels?

To provide the highest quality results from chemical peel facial treatments, Magnolia Plastic Surgery and MedSpa provides you with several options. Your medical-grade chemical peel with exfoliating solutions will reveal healthier, smoother skin. At our New Orleans, LA office, plastic surgeon Dr. Heath Charvet offers chemical peel treatments that remove skin abnormalities, including fine lines, wrinkles, scars, dry patches, hyperpigmentation issues, and more. Chemical peels work by removing damaged, dead skin cells using a customized solution on your skin, which causes the visible layer to slough off. When your skin heals and begins to repair and rejuvenate itself, you will notice a smoother, clearer complexion. A chemical peel facial is a nonsurgical method to make your complexion bright and may be appropriate for the face and neck. For more information, contact our New Orleans, LA office today.

Am I a Candidate for a Chemical Peel?

Receiving the recommendations of an aesthetic specialist during your initial consultation is the first step on your journey to smooth, healthy, and vibrant-looking skin. A team member at Magnolia Plastic Surgery and MedSpa will assess your skin during an examination in our New Orleans, LA office before choosing the best chemical peel for your ideal results. Chemical peel candidates, both women and men, should have visible concerns with their skin like scars, rough patches, hyperpigmentation, flaky skin, fine lines, sun spots, and more. We will suggest an appropriate type and strength of chemical peel to meet your needs.

How Is a Chemical Peel Performed?

Before your chemical peel at Magnolia Plastic Surgery and MedSpa, we will clean your skin, then apply a customized solution to your face and/or neck. We will massage the solution onto your face and let it work for an appropriate length of time. Finally, we will clean the peel off your face and apply a neutralizing agent. You are encouraged to bring sunscreen and/or a hat to wear outside following the peel to protect from sun exposure. The peels we offer range from light to deep.

  • Light peels: This level of peel will remove the top layer of your skin, giving your face a more radiant appearance and smoother texture.
  • Medium-depth peels: This type of peel penetrates further into your skin and is designed for patients who have significant damage to their skin, including deeper wrinkles and darker pigmentation issues.
  • Deep peels: This type of peel is great for patients who have age or dark spots, sun damage, significant acne scars, and/or deep-seated scars.

Depending on the type of chemical peel you choose, you should expect your face to itch and peel from several days to two or more weeks. We will give you instructions on how to best treat your skin during this time. No matter how badly your skin itches throughout the healing process, do not itch or pull off your skin as this may create scarring to your skin.

Chemical Peel FAQS

What level should I choose for my chemical peel?

The best chemical peel level for you will depend on your specific skin needs and aesthetic goals. During your consultation with Dr. Charvet, he can help you decide which formula is best for your skin. Some factors you might consider are your general health, the type of skin you have, the depth of your skin concerns, the time you can commit to recovery, and what concerns you have about the appearance of your skin. For first-time patients, it’s better to start with a lighter peel and see what you think of the results. After this, you and Dr. Charvet might alter your treatment plan to find the best type of peel for you.

Will my face hurt after a chemical peel?

Based on the formula used, you might feel mild discomfort. If you choose a lighter peel, you may feel some discomfort; however, it goes away quickly with the use of a handheld fan. Medium and deep peels are better for deeper skin problems and longer-lasting results; however, they are typically more uncomfortable. Numbing cream, skin medications, and ointments can be applied to help you feel more comfortable during your treatment. Dr. Charvet or a member of the Magnolia Plastic Surgery and MedSpa team will discuss how to care for your skin after a peel for the best and longest-lasting results.

How often can you get a chemical peel?

The frequency of your chemical peels will depend on the level of the peel, your skin’s response to treatment sessions, and other attributes. Usually, patients can safely receive light chemical peels about once per month and medium-strength peels 2 – 3 times annually. Deep peels are generally reserved for use every 2 – 3 years.

Can I combine a chemical peel with other treatments?

A chemical peel may be combined with another skin treatment at Magnolia Plastic Surgery and MedSpa. During your initial consultation, you should be open with Dr. Charvet about your skin concerns so he can create a comprehensive treatment plan that achieves your goals. This may include injectable wrinkle treatments (like JUVÉDERM® or BOTOX® Cosmetic) plus a chemical peel to rejuvenate your appearance.
